Silage Corn Nitrates

I am currently running tests on silage corn to assess quantities of nitrates under different levels of drought.  I'm taking samples on the bottom of the stalk as well as whole plants in hopes of finding ways to minimize levels as needed.

Watch for updates as results come in!!!

Rootworm Beetle Silk Feeding

A while back, I observed some fields with high corn rootworm beetle pressure.  I'm sure we're all familiar with the damage they can do in their larval form chewing up roots.  This year, I noticed an unusual amount of pressure from the beetle form.

The first symptom is a scratching appearance on the corn leaves.  As silks and tassels form, one notices the beetles begin to move and feed on these delicious, vulnerable organs.  Tassel damage is bad, but silk clipping is where they really cause damage.  A silk that is clipped early is a kernel that does not pollinate.  I will follow this feeding through the season to see how much damage occurs.  Older thresholds are not very reliable with today's grain prices.

Corn leaf blotches

I have received a few phone calls this week about yellow blemishes showing up on corn leaves.  This looks similar to HPPD inhibitor damage (such a Callisto).  However, it is caused by dirt that had clung to the plant earlier in its life.

The blocking of sunlight causes the plant to focus chlorophyll production elsewhere so it can be more productive.  As the plant grows and the dirt falls off, the chlorophyll production should start back up.

There should be very minimal (if any) loss in production due to this syndrome.

New Sidedress UAN bars

Ag Partners will have two new sidedress UAN bars available this spring in our area!!!  More details to come, but this is an exciting addition to enable late or additional nitrogen applications!  Lets get the nitrogen where the plant needs it, when the plant needs it!

More than Manure

Recently, I have been testing a new product called More than Manure by SFP.  It contains Nutrisphere (a nitrogen stabilizer) and Avail (which make phosphorus more available).  It is a revolutionary product because of it's ease of use.  It can be poured directly into a lagoon or pit and will disperse by itself!

Additionally, it can have some other benefits including eating up solids/crust (making manure more flowable) and reducing ammonia levels (increasing animal health and neighbor happiness).

This is a NEW product, so I have a couple test of it running.  In my testing, I have seen a pretty significant reduction of ammonia and a lessening in the crust (though not completely eliminating a heavy crust).
